Psoriasis (Kitibha / Ekakushtha / Twakvikara)

In Ayurveda, psoriasis is commonly correlated with Kitibha or Ekakushtha, types of skin disorders under Kushtha. It is caused by imbalance of Vata and Kapha doshas, along with impurity of blood (Rakta dushti). Weak digestive fire (Agni dushti) leads to accumulation of toxins (Ama), which circulate in the body and get deposited in the skin, resulting in dryness, scaling, and discoloration.

Main Causes:

  • Imbalance of Vata and Kapha doshas
  • Impure blood (Rakta dushti)
  • Weak digestion (Agni dushti) and Ama accumulation
  • Excess intake of incompatible foods (Viruddha Ahara)
  • Consumption of oily, heavy, and processed foods
  • Stress, anxiety, and unhealthy lifestyle

Common Symptoms:

  • Dry, thickened, and scaly skin patches
  • Silvery-white flakes on skin
  • Itching and irritation
  • Redness or discoloration of affected area
  • Cracks in skin that may bleed
  • Recurrent or long-lasting skin lesions

Ayurveda focuses on balancing Vata and Kapha, purifying the blood, improving Agni, and eliminating Ama through proper diet, lifestyle, herbal therapies, and detoxification (Panchakarma) to manage symptoms and promote healthy skin.
