Constipation (Vibandha)
In Ayurveda, constipation is known as Vibandha, which refers to difficulty in passing stools or incomplete bowel movements. It mainly occurs due to imbalance of Vata dosha, especially when dryness (Rukshata) increases in the body and the digestive fire (Agni) becomes weak. This leads to hard, dry stools and irregular bowel habits.
Main Causes:
- Low intake of fiber-rich foods (fruits, vegetables)
- Inadequate water intake
- Irregular eating and sleeping habits
- Suppression of natural urges (Vegadharana)
- Lack of physical activity
- Excess consumption of dry, cold, or processed foods
- Stress, anxiety, and disturbed lifestyle
Common Symptoms:
- Hard, dry stools
- Difficulty or strain during bowel movement
- Infrequent stools
- Feeling of incomplete evacuation
- Bloating and gas
- Headache, fatigue, or irritability
Ayurveda focuses on balancing Vata dosha, improving Agni, and lubricating the intestines through proper diet, hydration, daily routine, and natural therapies to promote smooth and regular bowel movements.
