Irritable bowel syndrome (Grahani)
In Ayurveda, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is commonly correlated with Grahani, a condition related to the small intestine and digestive system. It occurs due to weakened or irregular digestive fire (Agni), which leads to improper digestion and absorption of food. This imbalance, along with disturbance of Vata dosha (and sometimes Pitta and Kapha), results in irregular bowel habits and formation of toxins (Ama).
Main Causes:
- Weak or irregular digestive fire (Agni dushti)
- Irregular eating habits or unhealthy diet
- Excess intake of spicy, oily, or incompatible foods
- Stress, anxiety, and emotional disturbances
- Sedentary lifestyle and lack of exercise
- Previous history of indigestion or digestive disorders
Common Symptoms:
- Alternating constipation and loose motions
- Abdominal pain or cramps
- Bloating and excessive gas
- Mucus in stools
- Loss of appetite
- Weakness and fatigue
Ayurveda focuses on strengthening Agni, balancing Vata dosha, and removing Ama through proper diet, lifestyle regulation, stress management, and natural therapies to restore healthy digestion and bowel function.
