Frozen Shoulder (Avabahuka)
In Ayurveda, frozen shoulder is known as Avabahuka, a condition caused mainly by aggravation of Vata dosha affecting the shoulder joint. Due to increased dryness and degeneration, the normal lubrication of the joint reduces, leading to stiffness, pain, and restricted movement. Improper functioning of Agni and accumulation of toxins (Ama) may also contribute to blockage in the channels around the joint.
Main Causes:
- Aggravation of Vata dosha
- Aging and natural degeneration
- Lack of movement or prolonged immobilization
- Excessive strain or injury to the shoulder
- Exposure to cold and dry environment
- Weak digestion (Agni dushti) and toxin (Ama) accumulation
Common Symptoms:
- Persistent shoulder pain
- Stiffness and restricted movement
- Difficulty in lifting or rotating the arm
- Pain worsening at night
- Gradual loss of shoulder mobility
- Weakness in the affected arm
Ayurveda focuses on balancing Vata dosha, improving joint lubrication, and removing Ama through therapies like oil massage, fomentation, and proper diet and lifestyle to restore mobility and reduce pain.
