Paralysis (Pakshaghata)

Paralysis (Pakshaghata)

In Ayurveda, paralysis is known as Pakshaghata, where “Paksha” means one side of the body and “Aghata” means loss of movement or function. It is primarily caused by severe aggravation of Vata dosha, which affects the nerves and muscles, leading to loss of movement, sensation, or coordination in one or more parts of the body. Obstruction in body channels (Srotorodha) and weakened tissues may also contribute to this condition.

Main Causes:

  • Severe imbalance of Vata dosha
  • Blockage in body channels (Srotas)
  • Weak digestion (Agni dushti) and toxin (Ama) accumulation
  • Stress, trauma, or injury
  • Irregular lifestyle and improper diet
  • Aging and degeneration of nervous tissues

Common Symptoms:

  • Loss of movement in one side or part of the body
  • Weakness or stiffness of muscles
  • Difficulty in speaking or swallowing
  • Loss of sensation or numbness
  • Facial deviation or drooping
  • Poor coordination and balance

Ayurveda focuses on balancing Vata dosha, nourishing the nervous system, and improving circulation through therapies like oil massage (Abhyanga), fomentation (Swedana), medicated enemas (Basti), and proper diet and lifestyle to support recovery and improve function.
