Rhinitis (Pratishyaya)

In Ayurveda, rhinitis is described under Pratishyaya, a condition affecting the nasal passages due to imbalance of Kapha dosha, often associated with Vata. It occurs when excess mucus accumulates in the nasal channels, leading to blockage and irritation. Weak digestive fire (Agni dushti) and toxin (Ama) formation can further contribute to this condition, especially in allergic tendencies.

Main Causes:

  • Imbalance of Kapha and Vata doshas
  • Exposure to dust, pollen, smoke, or allergens
  • Consumption of cold, heavy, and oily foods
  • Seasonal changes and cold weather
  • Weak immunity and poor digestion (Agni dushti)
  • Irregular lifestyle and lack of proper rest

Common Symptoms:

  • Runny or blocked nose
  • Frequent sneezing
  • Nasal congestion
  • Itching in nose or throat
  • Watery eyes
  • Headache or heaviness in head

Ayurveda focuses on balancing Kapha, strengthening Agni, and clearing the nasal passages through therapies like Nasya, steam inhalation, proper diet, and lifestyle changes to provide relief and prevent recurrence.
