Obesity

Obesity (Sthoulya)

In Ayurveda, obesity is known as Sthoulya, a condition characterized by excessive accumulation of fat (Meda dhatu) in the body. It mainly occurs due to aggravation of Kapha dosha and imbalance of Agni (digestive and metabolic fire), leading to improper metabolism and storage of excess fat. This can also cause blockage in body channels (Srotorodha), affecting overall health.

Main Causes:

  • Imbalance of Kapha dosha
  • Weak digestion and metabolism (Agni dushti)
  • Excess intake of sweet, oily, heavy, and processed foods
  • Sedentary lifestyle and lack of physical activity
  • Overeating and irregular eating habits
  • Genetic tendency and hormonal imbalance

Common Symptoms:

  • Excess body weight and fat accumulation
  • Lethargy and lack of energy
  • Shortness of breath on exertion
  • Excessive sweating
  • Increased appetite and thirst
  • Reduced physical activity

Ayurveda focuses on balancing Kapha, improving Agni, reducing excess fat, and clearing channels through proper diet, regular exercise, lifestyle changes, and natural therapies to promote healthy weight management and overall well-being.
