Depression (Vishada / Avasada)
In Ayurveda, depression is described as Vishada or Avasada, a condition affecting the mind due to imbalance of Vata and Kapha doshas, along with disturbance of mental qualities (Rajas and Tamas). It occurs when the mind loses its natural balance, often due to stress, emotional strain, or improper lifestyle. Weak digestive fire (Agni dushti) and accumulation of toxins (Ama) may also affect mental clarity and overall well-being.
Main Causes:
- Imbalance of Vata and Kapha doshas
- Excess stress, anxiety, or emotional trauma
- Disturbance of mental qualities (Rajas and Tamas)
- Irregular lifestyle and lack of proper sleep
- Poor diet and weak digestion (Agni dushti)
- Lack of physical activity and social interaction
Common Symptoms:
- Persistent sadness or low mood
- Loss of interest in daily activities
- Fatigue and lack of energy
- Disturbed sleep (insomnia or excessive sleep)
- Poor concentration and memory
- Feelings of hopelessness or negativity
Ayurveda focuses on balancing Vata and Kapha, calming the mind, improving Agni, and enhancing mental well-being through proper diet, lifestyle, herbal support, meditation, and therapies like Shirodhara to restore emotional balance and positivity.
