Abdominal Pain (Udarashoola)

Abdominal Pain (Udarashoola)

In Ayurveda, abdominal pain is commonly referred to as Udarashoola (“Udara” = abdomen, “Shoola” = pain). It usually occurs due to disturbance in the digestive system, mainly caused by imbalance of Vata dosha, though Pitta and Kapha may also be involved. Improper digestion (Agni dushti) leads to gas formation, toxin (Ama) accumulation, or irritation in the abdomen, resulting in pain and discomfort.

Main Causes:

  • Irregular eating habits or skipping meals
  • Consumption of heavy, stale, or incompatible foods
  • Excess intake of gas-forming foods
  • Indigestion (Ajeerna) and weak digestive fire (Agni)
  • Constipation or improper bowel movements
  • Stress, anxiety, and disturbed lifestyle
  • Imbalance of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha doshas

Common Symptoms:

  • Pain or cramps in the abdomen
  • Bloating and gas
  • Heaviness in the stomach
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea or uneasiness
  • Constipation or irregular bowel habits

Ayurveda focuses on correcting Agni, balancing Vata dosha, and removing Ama through proper diet, lifestyle, and natural therapies to relieve abdominal pain and restore digestive health.
