Anxiety (Chittodvega)

In Ayurveda, anxiety is referred to as Chittodvega, a condition of mental disturbance caused mainly by aggravation of Vata dosha. Vata governs the nervous system and mind; when it becomes imbalanced, it leads to restlessness, fear, and excessive worrying. Disturbance of mental qualities (Rajas and Tamas), along with weak digestive fire (Agni dushti) and toxin (Ama) accumulation, can further affect mental stability.

Main Causes:

  • Aggravation of Vata dosha
  • Excess stress, worry, or emotional strain
  • Irregular lifestyle and lack of routine
  • Poor sleep or insomnia
  • Weak digestion (Agni dushti) and Ama accumulation
  • Excessive use of stimulants (tea, coffee)

Common Symptoms:

  • Excessive worry or fear
  • Restlessness and irritability
  • Palpitations (fast heartbeat)
  • Difficulty in sleeping
  • Poor concentration
  • Feeling of uneasiness or nervousness

Ayurveda focuses on balancing Vata dosha, calming the mind, and strengthening the nervous system through proper diet, daily routine, meditation, breathing practices, and therapies like Shirodhara to promote mental peace and stability.
