Insomnia (Anidra)
In Ayurveda, insomnia is known as Anidra, a condition characterized by difficulty in falling asleep or staying asleep. It is mainly caused by aggravation of Vata dosha, which leads to overactivity of the mind and nervous system. Imbalance of Pitta may also contribute, especially causing disturbed or interrupted sleep. Weak digestion (Agni dushti) and accumulation of toxins (Ama) can further disturb mental calmness and sleep quality.
Main Causes:
- Aggravation of Vata (and sometimes Pitta) doshas
- Stress, anxiety, and overthinking
- Irregular sleep habits and lifestyle
- Excessive use of screens or stimulants (tea, coffee)
- Weak digestion (Agni dushti) and Ama accumulation
- Lack of physical activity
Common Symptoms:
- Difficulty falling asleep
- Frequent waking during the night
- Light or disturbed sleep
- Early morning awakening
- Fatigue and lack of freshness
- Irritability and poor concentration
Ayurveda focuses on balancing Vata, calming the mind, and improving sleep quality through proper routine (Dinacharya), soothing diet, relaxation techniques, oil therapies, and practices like meditation to promote deep and restful sleep.
