Sinusitis (Dushta Pratishyaya)
In Ayurveda, sinusitis is described as Dushta Pratishyaya, a chronic condition of the nasal passages and sinuses caused mainly by imbalance of Kapha dosha, often associated with Vata. Excess Kapha leads to accumulation of thick mucus in the sinus cavities, causing blockage and inflammation. Weak digestive fire (Agni dushti) and toxin (Ama) formation further contribute to obstruction of the channels (Srotas), leading to recurrent symptoms.
Main Causes:
- Imbalance of Kapha and Vata doshas
- Exposure to dust, pollution, and allergens
- Cold weather and damp environment
- Consumption of cold, heavy, and oily foods
- Weak digestion (Agni dushti) and Ama accumulation
- Recurrent cold or untreated nasal infections
Common Symptoms:
- Nasal congestion or blockage
- Thick nasal discharge
- Headache or heaviness in head
- Pain around forehead, eyes, or cheeks
- Reduced sense of smell
- Post-nasal drip and throat irritation
Ayurveda focuses on balancing Kapha, clearing accumulated mucus, improving Agni, and cleansing the nasal passages through therapies like Nasya, steam inhalation, and proper diet and lifestyle to relieve symptoms and prevent recurrence.
