Asthma (Shwasa)

In Ayurveda, asthma is known as Tamaka Shwasa, a condition affecting the respiratory system caused mainly by imbalance of Kapha and Vata doshas. Excess Kapha leads to accumulation of mucus in the airways, while aggravated Vata causes constriction, resulting in difficulty in breathing. Weak digestive fire (Agni dushti) and accumulation of toxins (Ama) further block the respiratory channels (Pranavaha Srotas), worsening the condition.

Main Causes:

  • Imbalance of Kapha and Vata doshas
  • Exposure to dust, smoke, pollen, or allergens
  • Cold weather and damp environment
  • Consumption of cold, heavy, and oily foods
  • Weak digestion (Agni dushti) and Ama accumulation
  • Stress and emotional factors

Common Symptoms:

  • Difficulty in breathing (especially during exhalation)
  • Wheezing or whistling sound while breathing
  • Chest tightness
  • Frequent coughing, especially at night or early morning
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue due to breathing difficulty

Ayurveda focuses on balancing Kapha and Vata, clearing the respiratory channels, strengthening Agni, and improving immunity through proper diet, lifestyle, herbal therapies, and breathing practices to manage symptoms and enhance respiratory health.
