Common Cold (Pratishyaya)
In Ayurveda, common cold is known as Pratishyaya, a condition mainly caused by aggravation of Kapha dosha, often associated with Vata. It occurs when the body’s natural defense and digestive fire (Agni) become weak, leading to accumulation of toxins (Ama) and increased mucus production. Changes in weather, especially cold and damp conditions, further aggravate the condition.
Main Causes:
- Imbalance of Kapha and Vata doshas
- Exposure to cold weather, dust, or pollution
- Consumption of cold, heavy, or oily foods
- Weak immunity and poor digestion (Agni dushti)
- Irregular lifestyle and lack of proper rest
- Seasonal changes
Common Symptoms:
- Runny or blocked nose
- Sneezing
- Cough and throat irritation
- Mild fever or body ache
- Heaviness in head
- Loss of appetite
Ayurveda focuses on balancing Kapha dosha, improving Agni, and boosting immunity through warm diet, herbal remedies, steam inhalation, and proper rest to relieve symptoms and prevent recurrence.
