Vitiligo (Shwitra)

In Ayurveda, vitiligo is known as Shwitra, a type of skin disorder (Kushtha) characterized by loss of skin pigmentation. It is mainly caused by imbalance of Pitta dosha along with involvement of Vata and Kapha, and impurity of blood (Rakta dushti). Weak digestive fire (Agni dushti) leads to formation of toxins (Ama), which affect the skin tissues and disturb the normal color of the skin.

Main Causes:

  • Imbalance of Pitta dosha and Rakta dushti
  • Weak digestion (Agni dushti) and Ama accumulation
  • Consumption of incompatible foods (Viruddha Ahara), especially milk with sour or salty foods
  • Excess intake of spicy, sour, and heavy foods
  • Stress and emotional disturbances
  • Genetic predisposition

Common Symptoms:

  • White or depigmented patches on the skin
  • Gradual increase in size of patches
  • No itching or mild sensitivity in some cases
  • Affected areas may include face, hands, feet, or other body parts
  • Hair in affected area may turn white

Ayurveda focuses on balancing Pitta, purifying the blood, improving Agni, and removing Ama through proper diet, lifestyle changes, herbal medications, and detox therapies to support healthy skin pigmentation.
