Gout (Vatarakta)

Gout (Vatarakta)

In Ayurveda, gout is described as Vatarakta, a condition caused by the vitiation of both Vata dosha and Rakta (blood). When Vata becomes aggravated and gets obstructed by impure blood, it leads to severe pain and inflammation in the joints. Improper digestion (Agni dushti) also results in the accumulation of toxins (Ama), which further worsens the condition.

Main Causes:

  • Excess intake of rich, oily, spicy, and non-vegetarian foods
  • Consumption of alcohol and fermented foods
  • Irregular diet and overeating
  • Weak digestive fire (Agni) leading to toxin formation (Ama)
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Imbalance of Vata dosha and vitiation of blood (Rakta dushti)

Common Symptoms:

  • Sudden and severe joint pain (commonly in the big toe)
  • Swelling and redness in joints
  • Burning sensation in affected area
  • Tenderness and difficulty in movement
  • Warmth over the joint
  • Recurrent attacks of pain

Ayurveda focuses on balancing Vata and purifying Rakta, along with improving Agni and eliminating Ama through proper diet, lifestyle changes, and natural therapies to reduce pain and prevent recurrence.
