Osteoarthritis (Sandhivata)
In Ayurveda, osteoarthritis is known as Sandhivata (“Sandhi” = joints, “Vata” = dosha). It occurs due to aggravation of Vata dosha, which leads to degeneration, dryness, and weakening of the joints. With age or improper lifestyle, the lubricating elements in the joints reduce, causing friction, pain, and stiffness during movement.
Main Causes:
- Aging and natural wear and tear of joints
- Aggravation of Vata dosha
- Excessive physical strain or overuse of joints
- Obesity putting extra pressure on joints
- Improper diet lacking nourishment
- Previous joint injuries
- Sedentary lifestyle or lack of exercise
Common Symptoms:
- Joint pain, especially during movement
- Stiffness in joints (more in morning or after rest)
- Swelling or mild inflammation
- Reduced flexibility and difficulty in movement
- Cracking or creaking sound in joints
- Weakness in affected joints
Ayurveda focuses on balancing Vata dosha, nourishing the joints, and improving lubrication through proper diet, lifestyle, oil therapies, and natural treatments to reduce pain and improve mobility.
