Sciatica (Gridhrasi)

Sciatica (Gridhrasi)

In Ayurveda, sciatica is known as Gridhrasi, a condition caused mainly by aggravation of Vata dosha affecting the lower back and legs. The disturbed Vata leads to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, from the lower back to the buttocks and down the leg. Sometimes, involvement of Kapha dosha may cause heaviness and stiffness in addition to pain. Weak digestion (Agni dushti) and accumulation of toxins (Ama) can further block the channels, worsening the condition.

Main Causes:

  • Aggravation of Vata dosha
  • Prolonged sitting or poor posture
  • Heavy lifting or sudden strain
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Exposure to cold and dry conditions
  • Weak digestive fire (Agni) and Ama accumulation

Common Symptoms:

  • Radiating pain from lower back to leg
  • Tingling or numbness in the leg
  • Burning or sharp pain
  • Stiffness in lower back
  • Difficulty in walking or standing
  • Weakness in the affected leg

Ayurveda focuses on balancing Vata dosha, removing Ama, and strengthening the nervous system through therapies like oil massage, medicated enemas, proper diet, and lifestyle changes to relieve pain and improve mobility.
